July 12, 2005 : Calgary Stampede and the Bee Gees and ABBA

Since I was born in Calgary, I have seen many a Calgary Stampede. Having seen it so many times, I typically ignore the whole event now (it really doesn't do much for me anymore). However, I do check out the events to see if there is anyone of interest for me to see. A couple of years ago, I saw Glass Tiger who did a smashing job! Before that, I saw Moxy Fruvous in concert as well. They were excellent as well!

This year, as I perused the show listings, I didn't see anyone who really caught my eye... until I saw the Bee Gees and the ABBA tribute bands. The reviews I had read on them were quite good so I set my sights on the Stampede for July 12, 2005!

Side note: Had a problem getting images to work on this page. Specifically, none of the images were being scaled properly (ie. at all). Click here if you want to know how I solved this problem.

Near the midway

I arrived at the Stampede at around 7:45 pm. The Bee Gees show didn't start until 9:00, so I had a while to wander around. I took a look at the various rides on the midway and even took some movies of the rides. There are a lot of rides that are around that weren't here when I was a kid! I was never much of a ride person. The midway rides were always a reason for me to avoid the Stampede. Now, at least I'm old enough so that I can claim that I'm just too old for the rides!

All in all, the Stampede pretty much looked to me like it always had. Same old thing every year. It is nice to get down to the grounds and just feel the excitement in the air. There is a lot of that, there's no question about it!

On the fair grounds
Of course, one of the biggest things about the Stampede is all the junk food. There is no shortage of that either! I came across one of the most famous of those fine junk-food-dispencing-establishments: "Those little donuts"! To make matters worse, you can get a bag of 18 of those damn little things for $3.00 and 2 bags of 18 for $5.00.

Signage for those of you who need glasses. Good to know they've been around since 1968!

Someone looks like she's in the middle of eating one right now!
I wish to point out to everyone that I did, in fact, NOT eat any of those little donuts. I'm on a specific eating routine right now which I didn't want to disturb. However, smelling the heady aroma of sugared flour deep fried in lard is still allowed!
Once I finished my wandering around, it was off to the Coca-Cola stage
