General Information about Craig Schock

  • I am focusing some of my attention to teaching Object-Oriented software development and Web application development in the OOST program (http://www.oost.ca) formerly at the University of Calgary (http://www.ucalgary.ca).
  • With the remainder of my work time, I am trying to re-implement many of the systems and architectures I developed over the last 10 years. I am planning to release the source code to this development effort under the GNU GPL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html).
  • I am president of Arctic Fox Computer Consulting Inc (http://www.afox.org). Arctic Fox is a company which provides software development consulting services. It specializes in web applications written in Java. I have been a software consultant since 1987.

  • Teaching: I have been teaching since 1988 at Universities and in Industry. I have taught in many places throughout Canada and the United States. Interests

  • Hiking: I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains presents one with a lifetime of opportunities for the exploration and appreciation of raw natural beauty. Many tourists who come through Calgary are on their way to Banff National Park (http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/default.asp) and/or Jasper National Park (http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/default.asp). These are beautiful places, but if you should happen to come through, don't forget about Kananaskis Country (http://www.kananaskis.org/). That's where most of the local people go.
  • Music: I love music. All kinds of music. Visit the web site of one of my all-time favorite bands www.artificialjoyclub.com. One of my life's goals is to dedicate a year of my life to piano. I've played for 30 years, but never really had the time to give 100% of myself to the pursuit of making music. What would I play in that year of music? Chopin mostly, but you might hear me play "Linus and Lucy" on occasion. :-)
Since September, 2006, I have been a member of Calgary's Midnight Taiko Kai (http://www.midnight-taiko.com). If you don't know what Taiko is, it's those big-ass Japanese drums that people bang on to make a lot of noise!
  • Vegetarian Cooking. I love to cook. Many people have asked me to post my recipes. Coming from carnivores, I take this as quite the compliment :-) I will post recipes when I have the time to type them in. I tend to be very creative with my recipes; rather than saying "steam 6 c. potatoes", I will say "steam a bunch of potatoes". It adds a little adventure when you're not exactly sure how the result will turn out.
